An important representative of socio-critical art, Edmund Gwerk, was born in Banská Štiavnica. In his work, he often reflected on the hard life of miners, and the dominant theme was landscape painting. In it, he captured the Štiavnica nature, especially the Sitno hill with its strong visionary colors and unique composition of undulating horizons. His works are characterized by monumentality and a deep philosophical undertone, which distinguishes them from traditional landscape works.
